We now have the opportunity to present to you a course within one of the most important industries in the world: "Sustainable Shipping". Right now the shipping industry is focusing on Research and Development to develop technology that reduces environmental impact and increases energy efficiency. Through this unique course you will come to understand important aspects in this field. The main focus will be on emissions to air from ship in normal operation, but we will also briefly cover topics such as antifouling, ballast water, sewage and garbage, noise etc.

This will not only be a mind opening and inspiring course, it will also be a unique way for you to visit our majestic mountains and fjords. Norway is an enchanting country of trolls, long days of the sun, rich in fish and oil. You'll get to visit companies focusing on green shipping, visit UNESCO world-heritage sites along with experiencing merrymaking the Viking-way. So come to Norway!

  • Know the major types of emission to air (CO2, NOx, SOx, CH4, VOCs, PM, etc. ) and their corresponding shipboard sources
  • Know what impact (physical/chemical/biological) each of the different emission types have on the environment
  • Understand the significance of the extent of impact (local, regional, global)
The environmental track record of shipping
  • Know different methods for estimating global emissions from world shipping (fuel-based vs. activity-based, top-down vs. bottom-up models), and their main strengths and weaknesses

  • Obtain a broad overview of the current state of research and commonly accepted status for global warming
Shipboard sources
  • Know the core mechanisms, mainly focusing on the propulsion machinery, that causes today's shipboard emissions
