Selbukåten may be hard to find during winter. Good orienteering skills are recommended!
In 1958 some people thought that not only the Studenterhytta but also the cabins were too luxurious. A group especially for tiny cabins (called kåte) was started and in 1959 Selbukåten was built in Selbuskogen. Even if form and technique of building are quite simple, Selbukåten gives as much comfort as all the other cabins. The inventory is the same but the walls are made of birch limbs and turf which makes it easy to come into a good mood. The cabin has been used for many different things. Some people tried to love letters other used the cabin for trips in the surroundings. Close to the cabin you can find Vennafjellet. There are some smaller hills around, nice resting places and if you are lucky, you can find lots of cloudberries.
Some people tried to read for exams at Selbukåten but that was not always successful.
The Selbukåten you can visit today is already the third one at that place. The first two had problems with fouling because the limbs were set directly onto the ground.
Both in 1965 and in 1986 a new cabin was built. The 1986-version is somewhat bigger than the earlier ones. Now the limbs are set onto stones. Otherwise the building technique is the same as before: some bended birch limbs as main construct, some smaller branches around, plastic and turf to fill the wholes.
The "beds" give place for four if you like to sleep close, with two persons you have good space. Don't forget a sleeping pad, there are no mattresses at Selbukåten!
If you have enough with the quite tiny Selbukåten and want to have more luxury you can continue to Heinfjordstua. On the trip to Heinfjord you can pass the earlier NTHI-cabin Vennavollen.
Route description
The easiest way to come to Selbukåten is from Vindsmyr where you can come by bus or car. From there you take the road to Vindsmyra and then the path, the marches or the stream westwards to Pundsvollen. Even if Pundsvollen is marked on the map you should not expect a huge building, you will find some remains of an earlier alp. From Pundsvollen you go in direction south, up a hill and then down to Korsmyra. The cabin is placed at the west side of this march, south of the stream that comes from Modalen.
Alternatively you can go up the Såsdalen, south of the hill marked 530. Then you will automatically reach the right march. Both routes do not take longer than one hour if you find the cabin.
During winter it might be easier to follow the marches. Quite often there are skiing tracks starting in Vindsmyra which pass the cabin by some hundred meters.

Degree of difficulty
| 1) | For beginners. These cabins are easy to find and a road is going all the way to the cabin. You should anyhow be familiar with map and compass. |
| 2) | For those with some experience. Characteristic for this category is that the cabins are not far from the nearest road and that the terrain is simple to walk in. |
| 3) | For experienced users. These cabins are situated farther from the nearest road and require good orienteering skills. May be exposed to the weather during winter. |
| 4) | For ambitious users. What distinguishes these cabins from level 3 is that the terrain is more demanding on the way to the cabin, as well as that they can be hard to find. |
| 5) | Demanding. The trip requires that you are familiar with the mountains and are well equipped. Long walking distance and weather conditions might be challenging. |
