Leilighet
Enebolig
Rekkehus
Tommansbolig

Egenkapital
Fellesgjeld
Prisantydning
Totalpris
Omkostninger
Fellesformue
Verditakst
Felleskostnader
Bud

6.2. Social Networking in Norway

A common belief is that it is difficult to make connection with Scandinavian people. In a recent survey among expats who are living abroad in 67 countries, Norway has been considered the second most difficult for finding friends, after Denmark. But as in any other culture, people in Scandinavia would like to socialize too. However, the things may work differently here and the culture codes for socializing might not be the same as codes in many other cultures and that’s why people who are not familiar with Norwegian socializing basis, find it hard to make friend here. In this article some general points are discussed first and then various social network platforms that might be international but also available in Norway are presented.

General points
Generally, Norwegians are individualistic and focus a lot on their hobbies. Although the work-life balance in Norway tops in the world and people have more work-free time than most of other countries, the work-free part is devoted to family oriented activities and hobbies. That’s why socializing usually happens through framed activities: except members of family and old friends from schools, most of other friends are found through the sport clubs, culture/art clubs, volunteer networks and all other kinds of framed activities. It is very rare that people talk to strangers/make friends in the bars/pubs/parks/restaurants; except when they are drunk which only leads to talking, not making friends. The next time you see the same person sober (s)he doesn’t remember you. So if you want to meet new people, and find new friends you should join the clubs of your hobbies and interests and if you don’t have a specific hobby then you should find one. This is how socializing works in Norway even among Norwegians. So it has little to the fact that you are a foreigner (however, knowing Norwegian language is definitely a big facilitator and you should learn it asap). This phenomenon has been explained in more details here and here with some illustrations and very useful tips.
In the next sections some examples of framed activities or social platforms for meeting new people in Trondheim are introduced.
Note: Don’t generalize the mentioned points to the 5 million Norwegians. There are always people in any society that are different from the norm. So don’t be afraid of being open with people in bars, parks, bus stops, airports, etc. You may make some friends out of framed activities too. However, framed activities are the main key to meeting new people and finding new friends.
Voluntary Activities
Norway has a long tradition of voluntary (frivillig) activities. According to a report published in 2002, half of the Norwegian population reports contributing their time to voluntary organizations over one year. Voluntary work can be done in a long run by joining organizations like red cross, board of sport/culture/art/political clubs, or short run such as voluntary work in music/film/sport festivals. In any case you can both enjoy contributing to the society and finding new friends. Start with voluntary work in a music festival such as Pstereo, and if you like it expand it to longer term voluntary activities that you are interested in.
Meetup
Meetup is a global online social networking service that facilitates offline gatherings in various localities around the world. The meetups can be around any topic: technology, art, sport, or just socializing. Look for all meetups around Trondheim and join the ones you are mostly interested.
InterNations
Couchsurfing is a global hospitality service but has a social networking too. Couchsurfers in Trondheim has a bi-weekly meetings where you can meet tourists or local people. Join FB page for finding when is the next meeting.
Party Culture
After a while hanging out with new people through school or framed activities, you will be invited to Norwegian parties. Party culture might be different in Norway compared to some other cultures. A typical weekend party might have three sections where you can join one or two parts if you don’t have time for all. In the first part which is called vorspiel, everyone is invited to a friend’s house around 7-8 pm. It is the only occasion in Norway where people do not need to show up on time; even it is better to attend a bit later to make sure that the host is ready. The host prepares some snacks, but everyone should bring her own drink. The first section which takes to 11-12 pm is only drinking and talking which may sound a bit boring for people from cultures where they cannot not dance when they are in a so-called party. Around 11-12 pm those who want to continue the party take a bus to downtown and find a disco for drinking more and also dance. Around 2:30 the bars and discos must be closed. Many people at this point may go home, but the rests go to a friend’s house that is usually in downtown for the third part of the night that is called nachspiel (afterparty) and is for becoming completely drunk and will usually feature more mellow music. After an hour or two it involves puke, complains from the neighbors and drunk people sleeping around the apartment ( Ref)

7. Activities
7.1. Winter Activities

General Information
With 72 days of average temperature below zero and 68 days of snow coverage over 5 cm (see statistics), enjoying winter activities is more obligatory than optional in Trondheim. The city and surrounding areas are a heaven for winter activity lovers. Various activities are possible in winter time. Main activities are listed below. Equipment and clothes for doing these activities can be borrowed for free from Trondheim kommune, bought as second hand from Finn and Fretex, or purchased new from many online and offline sport stores; prisjakt compares the prices.

1. Nordic ski
Trondheim is home to nordic ski including cross country (langrennski in Norwegian) and back country (fjellski in Norwegian). They say that sometimes if Sør-Trøndelag be considered as a separate country in the winter olympics, it can become the first country of olympics due to high number of medal winners in cross country from the county. There are prepared cross country tracks all around the city and even some years in the city area, from Nov/Dec to Mar/Apr depends on the year. Skisporet is a website with almost realtime data about the conditions of the tracks in Norway.

Besides the prepared tracks around the city, Sør-Trøndelag has infinitive hills for trying back country ski. You can find many trip suggestions (for both prepared tracks and off-piste) on http://www.ut.no/ or on their app (Android and iPhone) based on difficulty, area and type of trip.

2. Downhill or alpine ski
Although Trondheim is not surrounded by high mountains, it is possible to try downhill ski in the area. Vassfjellet is a cozy alpine center just 23 km south of the city with 11 trails and 5 lifts which usually runs from December to March. Oppdal ski center is 120 km south of the city with 39 trails and 18 lifts. Åre which is the largest ski resort in Sweden is 160 km west of Trondheim and offers 112 trails and 46 lifts, which is perfect for holidays or long weekends.

Besides skiing in pistes, off-piste downhill ski (called touring ski or randonee too) has gained popularity in the recent years in mountains not far from Trondheim. Mountains in Trollheimen, Sunndal and Sylane are the examples. Again www.ut.no is a good place for finding possible tours.

3. Ice skating
Ice skating is available both indoor and outdoor in Trondheim. During winter time, Trondheim kommune prepares 55 outdoor fields for ice skating (find them on the map). Indoor ice skating is also possible, e.g. in Leangen.

4. Ice climbing
Ice climbing is possible both around the city and also in farther destinations in Sør-Trøndelag county. Around the city, Theisendammen and Trolla are the known examples. In the Sør-Trøndelag, the icefalls in Drivdalen (especially Kongsvollfossen) are classic destinations. You can find many known and less known destinations in the facebook page of Isklatring i Trondheim.

5. Dog-sledding
Dog-sledding is a fun winter activity worth to try at least once. There are various touristic areas for doing so in Trøndelag. Røros, Steinkjer and Meråker are the famous places to name. Read more info here.

7.2. Summer Activities

General Information
Although summer, in its literal meaning, is very short and unstable in Trondheim, the city and surrounding nature offer various opportunities for the period of May-October. Hiking, camping, cabin trips, mountain biking, outdoor climbing, swimming, kayaking, rafting, slacklining, beach volleyball and of course picnic/grilling are some of the activities people do in summer. Equipment and clothes for doing these activities can be either borrowed for free from Trondheim kommune, bought as second hand from Finn and Fretex, or purchased new from many online and offline sport stores; prisjakt compares the prices. Some of the mentioned activities and tips for finding their places are listed as follows.

Note: You can find many trip suggestions on http://www.ut.no/ or on their app (Android and iPhone) based on difficulty, area and type of trip.

1. Hiking, camping and cabin trips
All difficulty grades of hiking are accessible from Trondheim. The hills around the town, Bymarka and Estenstadmarka areas, and the coasts of Trondheimsfjord are extensive networks of marked paths for hiking which connect several cabins (cafe-restaurants) and lakes. Some of the routes are described here. The famous 7-tops path which is a 30 km hike in Bymarka is an exciting one-long-day hike if you want to challenge yourself; it is better to be done out of the annual event if you don’t like to hike along thousands of people.

Longer and steeper hiking routes are also available if you drive a bit. Trollheimen (home of the trolls) area is the most popular one which includes incredible hiking routes and sceneries. Famous Norwegian national parks, Dovre and Rondone, or spectacular Romsdalen valley are not very far from Trondheim either and many opportunities call for a weekend hike withins these areas. Dovre and Romsdalen are both accessible by train in the case you don’t want to drive yourself.

For camping and staying in cabins there are either hundreds of personal cabins for rent or you can use The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) cabins. If you pay an annual membership the price of staying in DNT cabins become much cheaper. NTNUI (sport organisation at NTNU) has also several cabins around Trondheim which are very cheap (suitable for students). You should usually stay in a queue to get the key to popular cabins. You can also join NTNU ski og fjell (skiing and mountaineering) group. They have exciting trips during both autumn and spring semesters.

Besides mentioned general info, here are the name of some hills or mountains not far from Trondheim which offer nice views and you can do them in one day (including transportation): Våttåkammen (45-60 min hike from the town), Gråkallen (15-20 min hike from Skistua), Møkkelfjellet (2 hours hike from Fjærlia), Almannberget (1.5-2 hours hike from Oppdal) and if you want a more challenging but exciting one: Innerdaltårnet (4-6 hours from the parking place in Innerdalen).

2. Road trip

If you do not want to hike, road trip is an option for enjoying Norwegian nature too. Here are some suggestions (it is certainly possible to customise them or choose a shorter part):

  • Trondheim – Storlien – Tännforsen – Trondheim (1 day)
  • Trondheim – Hitra – Frøya – Trondheim (1 day)
  • Trondheim – Dombås – Trollstigen – Åndalsnes – Aursjøvegen – Trondheim (2 days)

3. Outdoor climbing
There are many places not far from Trondheim for outdoor climbing. The nearest is Korsvika. Tikneppen in Bymarka is the second nearest option. If driving is an option, Hell is a famous place for climbing with various routes for beginners and experts which is just a few kilometers driving from Værnes aiport. Størren, Ekne and Selnes are other great choices for weekend climbing tours.

4. Via Ferrata and Adventure Park
100 km towards Åre (Sweden), which means 1.5 hours driving, there is an adventure park called Rypetoppen; perfect for both adults and children. It has various activities in a beautiful nature. Check out their website for more info, prices and opening hours.

Also, in the north of Trondheimfjorden, just in the opposite side of Trondheim there is a via ferrata called Munkstigen. A via ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) is a steel cable which runs along a climbing route and is periodically fixed to the rock to protect climbers from any fall, therefore it is suitable for even kids. Check out Munkstigen website.

5. Swimming, kayaking and rafting
Swimming outside is possible in almost all lakes around Trondheim except the ones that are used for drinking water. Lian lake, Kyvannet, Teisendammen, Baklidammen, Estendsadammen or Trondheimsfjorden are some easily accessed options. For Kayaking, Tronheimkajakk inside Trondheim is the most convenient option. However, there are more options in Trøndelag which are described here. Rafting is popular in Oppdal where rivers are more roaring. Check here.

6. Fishing
The coast of Trøndelag with the islands Hitra & Frøya, the Trondheim fjord, Fosen peninsula and Namdalskysten, is part of what draws many tourists to Trøndelag, and fishing is one of the most popular activity. Besides sea fishing, many lakes not far from Trondheim are perfect for freshwater fishing. Read more about fishing in Trøndelag here. For salmon and lake fishing you need to purchase permit; see here.

7. Slacklining, beach volleyball and grilling
In summer times, slacklining and grilling is possible actually everywhere inside or around Trondheim as long as trees and grass are available. However, there are some more clear spots where beach volleyball is also available which makes the combination of the activities more enjoyable. Djupvika, Lian lake, Kyvannet lake have beach volleyball fields besides the fjord or lakes. Dead valley besides Gløshaugen campus is also a great place for beach volleyball.

8. Skydiving
Skydiving with an instructor can be done in Trondheim or Oppdal. Check prices here. If you want to become a skydiver, NTNU has the course. Check out here.

7.3. Restaurants

7.4. Cinemas

There are two cinema centers in Trondheim: Prinsen (8 salons) and Nova (11 salons). If you become a member of cinema club in Trondheim, sometimes (on average once in one/two months) you receive an email announcing a free offer for the first preview of a movie. Then people get free tickets based on first in first served strategy.

As a general rule, your relatives or your friends should be able to get a short term visa to visit you in Norway. A visitor’s visa allows them to stay in Norway or other countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days. But for specific countries, which is called Orange list by UDI, there are some restrictions. Iran is in the orange list and the restrictions applies to Iranians and their relatives. So, if someone from Iran is going to get a visa based on your invitation, the probability is as follows:

  • Parents/children
As a main rule the application will be granted.
  • Spouses/cohabitants
As a main rule the application will be granted a visa, provided that the relationship is well established.
  • Siblings
The application can be granted. In our experience older siblings represent less of an emigration risk than younger siblings.
  • More distant relatives/boyfriends/girlfriends/tourists/others
In general, applications will not be granted.
  • Business travelers / attendees at cultural events
The application can be granted, if the purpose of stay has been sufficiently substantiated.

If based on the mentioned categories you think your relative has the chance to get the visa, (s)he should apply via Norwegian embassy in Tehran. Here is the list of required documents for Iranian applicants. The whole process is described here.
