About fencing
Fencing is a sport that challenges you both physically and mentally, and during training you develop better reflexes, coordination, strength, and stamina. The sport is well suited both for beginners and for long-time fencers. You learn the basic techniques quite fast, but can spend a lifetime perfecting the tiny details that will make you a really good fencer.
The goal of fencing is to hit your opponent with a "weapon" before he or she hits you. There are three different kinds of weapons authorized for use in fencing; épée, foil, and sabre, and these differ in length and weight as well as in the method for scoring a hit. In Norway, only the épée is used.
It may sound dangerous using "weapons", but this is not the case. Because we have protective equipment and strict rules of conduct, fencing is among the safer sports that you are likely to try. The worst you are likely to risk are a few bruise marks here and there.
When you start fencing with us, we will be more than happy to lend you the equipment you need. If you find out that you want to buy your own equipment, you can get the basic things you need for about NOK 3,500.
Social Activities
Every Tuesday after training is time for beer! We then go to Pia's Cafe, in Elgesetergate, across the street from Samfundet. This is an old tradition in the fencing group, and if you want to really get to know your fellow fencers, this is an excellent place to start. Drinks other than beer are also totally acceptable.
Parties and vorspiels happen several times during the semester, often without much advance planning. One notable exception is the yearly traditional Christmas party ("julebord"), known for its high class and good food.
You can find many pictures at the picture page.In addition, we periodically make cabin trips, skiing trips, and other excursions.
