The Nidaros Domers started out as the Trondheim Tomcats in 1992. The
Tomcats competed in the 2nd division of NoAFF and stayed in the second
division until becoming Division Champions in 1998.
The name Nidaros Domers was changed again to add NTNUI at the end of the
90's after the Domers and NTNUI became partners. We have now finished our
fourth season in the 1st division in NoAFF as the NTNUI Nidaros Domers.
In 1999 the Domers entered the top division and were ready for a rough
ride. They were unable to earn a win in their "rookie" season. The brave
warriors of 1999 took their lumps and vowed to show the league that they
had staying power and would be back and better in 2000.
2000 brought a change to the Domers organization. A new board and new
vision were leading the Domers into a new era. The Domers brought over 2
player/coaches to help with the Offensive line, and a non playing Head
Coach. Both Chris Johnson and Don Cotter left a mark on the team and
with their help the Domers picked up their first 1st Division victory at the
expense of the VIF Trolls.
The Domers were seriously undermanned and struggling late in the season to
adapt to a new coaches system. The road trip to Jordal looked like it
would be a long day out. The game was tough, spirited and emotional. I can say
that 3 years later I don’t remember that much of the game, but I will
never forget the atmosphere and energy. The Domers had the lead going into the
fourth quarter and were able to hold out long enough for the clock to
expire on the Trolls comeback attempt. It was a day that will forever mark a
change in the Domers history. We proved, if only to ourselves, that we
belonged here in the top division.
2001 had a lot of promise for us, we felt that with some good things
learnt from our previous season, we were ready to move up in the rankings.
Finish import Toni Piirto helped us stay tough in games, but the Domers were
unable to better the 2000 win/loss record. The Domers finished 4th and just out
of the playoffs.
2002 has been our strangest and best season ever. With the temporary
absence of the Domers "franchise player" Atle Prange, Canadian QB Ken
Williams joined the Domers to help bring the offence up to pace with the
top teams in the league. Canadian running back Rodger Allain added hard
running and team spirit to the mix.
The League expanded by 3 team in 2002 and split into 2 conferences. The
Domers were undefeated in their own Western Conference and were ready to
take on the 2nd place finishers of the Eastern Conference in the playoffs,
when league structure came unravelled and the Domers found themselves
sitting out the playoffs due to a strange NoAFF ruling.
Our 2003 season started the day we finished the 2002 season. We started
training regularly in September and were looking forward to defending our
Conference title and challenging for the National Championship. The Board
has again restructured and have started out the season by resigning the
Head Coach. We now turn our focus to preparing our senior team for the 2003 series.
September brought with it some new fine new recruits, and the new blood seemed
to be what our program needed to get the fires burning again. A good off season
paid of with a 67-0 pounding of Bergen in our season opener. The Domers easily
secured a second straight western conference title and had high hopes going
into the playoffs. LB import, Mike Lynch, boosted the power of the Domers
defence (#1 ranked Defence in Norway), but the offensive firepower of the
1814’s proved too much and the Domers were knocked out in the semi finals.
In 2005 the Domers competed in both the 1. division and the 2. division. After beating the Oslo Vikings twice and tieing once against the VIF Trolls, Domers ended on 3. place in the regular season. In the playoffs the 1814s was too strong and went on to win the championship. The 2. divison team ended on second place in their conference and was left out of the playoffs.
In 2006 the Domers had taken a step down to the 2. division due to several retirements and few players. The division was made up of 4 teams in total with 2 conferences, North and South. The winner of each conference would meet in the finals. After only losing one game to the Hamar Ruins, the Domers went on to meet Bergen Storm in the finals. The Domers claimed the 2. division title after defeating the Bergen Storm 34-14.
