International Mother Language Day 2009

The program sucessfully ended. Thank you all for your cooperation. See you next year again.

We are glad to inform you that Bangladesh Cultural Organization (BCO) at Trondheim is going to observe International Mother Language (IML) Day on 28th of February 2009. It will be observed along with NTNU international office with many international guests.

International Mother Language Day (21st February) was proclaimed by UNESCO and has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. (wikipedia).

This is mostly to recognise the language movement by Bangladeshi to protect their language Bengali when Pakistan declared Urdu as the sole language of both West and East Pakistan (From 1947 to 1971, they both were together and Bangladesh was called East Pakistan). On the 21st February, 1952, many Bengali spoken people were killed by Pakistani army and police in Dhaka during a demonstration.

News :
Nation pays homage to language martyrs

"They stood up together

To protect the honor of the sound

That issued from the lips of a new-born baby

Churning the very core of his existence,

The utterance that sanctified for him

His first lesson of humanity"

- (Hasan Hafizur Rahaman)
