Attac arrangerer Café NordSør-møte: “Does Aid Help?”
TID: Kl 19.00, tirsdag 26. oktober
STED: Klubben, Studentersamfundet
INNLEDERE:
- Marianne Borgen, Head of Save the Children Norway’s Domestic Programme
- Håkon Bolkan, President of Doctors Without Borders Norway
- Bengt Nilsson, Filmmaker, journalist, author of “Sweden’s African War”
MØTETEKST:
“In the last fifty years, trillions of dollars in aid has been transferred from rich countries to developing countries. Every dollar given is seemingly a good gift – either contributing to long-term development or short-term emergency relief. But aside from the immediate relief, does aid really improve the lives of people in poor countries? According to a recent NORAD report, we simply don’t know in most cases – the lack of an es…tablished system to evaluate aid and development projects long-term makes it hard to tell.
Dambisa Moyo, the author of “Dead Aid”, claims that the good intentions of
aid projects are usually undone by their unintended side effects, like funding warlords and dictators, feeding corruption or stifling local businesses.
Can aid trap countries in a vicious cycle, and if so, how can they break out of it? Do aid NGOs, in their hurry to get in the field and help, underestimate the complexity of the situations they get involved in?”
